COUNSELING SERVICES
Newborn screening Counseling
At the hospital, all newborns are tested for a variety of congenital and heritable disorders, including sickle cell disease and trait. The families of infants who test positive for sickle cell trait are invited to meet with one of our certified counselors to discuss sickle cell and gain an understanding of the impact trait could have on their child’s life.

Child and Adult Trait Counseling
Counseling services are available to anyone who tests positive for sickle cell trait or one of its variants. Certified sickle cell counselors assist individuals in understanding their sickle cell status and its implications. Our goal is to counsel individuals with positive test results so that they can make informed decisions about their lives. All counseling sessions are confidential, non-directive, and offered free of charge.
Trait Counseling at Local Health Department
As the Mobile Chapter’s service area encompasses nine counties, many families of infants with sickle cell trait are unable to travel to Mobile for counseling. In March 2011, the Association began offering counseling services at health departments in Baldwin, Escambia, Monroe, Clarke, Washington, Conecuh, Covington, and Choctaw counties.
